Instrumented Sheaves

Sheave in use

These instrumented sheaves are used as fairleads and cable supports for various oceanographic instruments which require electrical conductor cable wire rope or synthetic rope. The snatch block configuration permits rapid placement and removal of the cable without removing the instruments or connector at the end of the cable. Aluminum and galvanized steel construction is used for light weight, strength, and resistance to corrosion. The Series 800 is available in several standard sizes. An electronic wire scope counter and a nylatron sheave are used in the instrumented series. All factory shipped units include hands-on factory training and acceptance at our facilities in San Diego. Remote Technical Service and Support are also included with each Sheave and cable handling system/accessory.

Options and Upgrades

Scope and Speed
The Scope and Speed requires the addition of a highly reliable and accurate quadrature sensor to the sheave, along with magnets that are permanently installed in the sheave wheel. Our sensors and magnets are all potted for long term durability in harsh marine environments. The quadrature sensor features a MIL spec connector for simple plug and play operation with either RPC-80x or RPC-90x displays.

High-Resolution Scope and Speed
The high-resolution option builds on our already capable Scope and Speed option, but doubles the number of potted magnets in order to double the resolution of the sheave from 0.1m to 0.05m.

Tension
The Tension option adds a high accuracy, stainless steel S-Beam Load Cell with a custom clevis mount that is seamlessly integrated into the sheave. The S-beam wiring is potted into a junction box on the side of the sheave and features a MIL spec connector for simple plug and play operation with either the RPC-80x or RPC-90x.

Rugged Controls Model RPC-80x (Standard Display)
The Rugged Controls RPC-80x “Rugged Programmable Controller” offers a compact marinized HMI combined with today’s latest processing technology. The RPC 80x is engineered to perform in the harshest outdoor marine environments and features a daylight readable 160×80 electroluminescent display. The display features programmable alarms, configurable screens and serial connections for system flexibility and expansion.

The screen is configurable and the RPC-80x can switch between US customary and metric units.

The RPC-80x can display two parameters at time, such as scope and speed, scope and tension or speed and tension.

When purchased through InterOcean Systems the RPC-80x will be programmed and calibrated to your custom 800 Series sheave and delivered ready for installation and use.

InterOcean supplied RPC-80x displays come with a stainless, gimbal mounted enclosure for easy mounting. The display can also be panel mounted for permanent installations.

Rugged Controls Model RPC-90x (Upgrade Display)
The Rugged Controls RPC-90x is a sophisticated yet extremely durable cable monitoring processor and display unit with expanded features compared to the RPC-80x. The 320×240, daylight readable display is almost twice the size of the RPC-80x and can be configured to display tension, scope and speed simultaneously. The RPC-90x features a 316 stainless display panel, programmable alarms, serial communications, digital outputs and more. The RPC-90x is the perfect complement to InterOcean Systems 800 Series sheaves and is our preferred display, especially when coupled with tension monitoring.

The screen is configurable and the RPC-90x can easily switch between US customary and metric units.

The RPC-90x can display all three of the critical sheave parameters simultaneously: Tension, Scope and Speed.

When purchased through InterOcean Systems the RPC-90x will be programmed and calibrated to your custom 800 Series sheave, delivered ready for installation and use. InterOcean supplied RPC-90x displays come with a stainless, gimbal mounted enclosure for easy mounting. The display can also be panel mounted for permanent installations.

4″ Remote Secondary Display Unit

The 4” Remote Secondary Display features 4” tall digits that can be read up to 180 feet away. The remote display communicates with either the RPC-80x or RPC-90x through the included (standard) 40-foot cable. The display is housed in a rugged aluminum enclosure rated to NEMA 4X / IP65 and comes with mounting brackets for hanging or wall mounting.

The parameter being displayed on the remote display is configurable through the RPC units. Each remote display can only display one parameter at a time. Multiple remote displays can be ordered and installed as an array to display multiple parameters simultaneously.

2″ Remote Secondary Display Unit

The 2” Remote Secondary Display shares all the features of the 4” display above, with smaller 2” tall digits that can be read up to 130 feet away.

Wireless Sheave System

InterOcean Systems wireless system eliminates the cabling and wiring headaches involved with installing traditional instrumented sheaves. Our sheave system is completely self-contained making it ideal for moving from boat to boat. Our systems also lend themselves to on-shore projects and rental pools. The display unit must be connected to an AC or DC power supply (or battery).

The wireless system consists of a high performance, 900MHz, spread spectrum radio system capable of transmitting 150 ft with no FCC license required. The rechargeable batteries will last 32 hours of continuous use and feature Bluetooth communications so you can monitor the batteries from any smart phone.
