InterOcean systems has recently supplied the Model 71217-TC Trawl/Core Winch to the U.S. Coast Guard for use on the U.S.C.G. Healy, an ice-breaker class vessel, for science operations. This heavy-duty dual drum winch is powered by a 300-hp electric motor coupled to a gearbox shared by both drums. This all-electric winch is computer controlled, allowing programmed casts for automatic operation. In addition to controlling the winch speed, controlled tension, and cable paid-out, the system records a history of loads seen by the cable and provides an improved method in determining cable condition and timing of costly cable replacements. Replacement of cable before catastrophic failure can help to reduce the loss of equipment and injury to personnel.

The Trawl/Core winch is designed to hold 14,000 meters of 9/16 inch wire rope of 10,000 meters of 3/4 inch wire rope on one drum and 12,000 meters of 0.680 inch cable on the second drum. The system is rated for over 26,000 pounds of line pull at all layers. The winch operates at variable speeds, up to 390 feet/minute. Each drum is provided with a separate automatic powered level wind fairlead assembly driven by a diamond screw.
